The Daintree is considered the oldest rainforest in the world, being over 140 millions years old. The Daintree rainforest is located about 2 hours north of Cairns so you will need a full day to explore this amazing place.

The other popular rainforest location is Kuranda. Kuranda Rainforest is 20 minutes from town, so much closer than the Daintree. In this tour visitors travel up to Kuranda by train (scenic railway) and return by the skyrail having a great view of the rainforest from the top. Once in Kuranda Village travellers can spend 1 hour to up to 4 hours exploring the place. At Kuranda Village you can find wildlife parks such as the Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld Kuranda, Koala Gardens and The Rainforestation. There are two touristy islands close to Cairns, offering visitors a half or full day trip. They are Fitzroy Island and Green Island. Fitzroy Island is a National Park with mountains filled with lush rainforest. Fitzroy Island is much bigger than Green Island with its area totaling 339 hectares. Because of the mountains Fitzroy Island is great for those who like doing hiking, with several tracks available. The most popular one is the hiking track to the summit, the tallest point of the island, 269 metres high. It takes about 45 minutes to get to the summit and the walk is considered easy to moderate.

Fitzroy Island is also great for those who want to experience the great barrier reef. There is a reef system around the island. This reef is the inner reef which is not as prestigious as the outer but it is home to many corals and marine life.

Fitzroy Island Tours

Green Island is a much smaller island totalling an area of 15 hectares. You can walk around the whole island and it takes about 40 minutes.

Green Island has white sand beaches all around it and it is definitely very paradisiacal. There is some rainforest on the island but not a lot if compared to Fitzroy Island. Also the island is flat and without mountains.
