Cairns is the perfect place to spend the school holidays with kids. There are so many tours and activities available around Cairns that will keep your “little ones" very busy.

But what about the free activities?
Many parents ask us about public parks, kids playgrounds where they can take the kids to play and have fun for free, or paying little money.
Tourism Cairns has put together a list of things to do with kids around Cairns that will cost nothing or very little. I am sure these tips will be very handy for families.
The Esplanade and Lagoon
The Esplanade has to be the busiest place in Cairns. It is the main area of town where most of the hotels, restaurants and the popular Lagoon are located. It is definitely a great place to take the kids. I am sure the whole family will enjoy our Cairns Esplanade.
The esplanade is a 2.5 kilometres boardwalk path built along the coast line. Along the esplanade families will find kids playgrounds, exercise equipment, toilet facilities and also water bows for dogs.
At the Esplanade there is the Cairns Lagoon, a 4800 square metre saltwater swimming pool where anyone can go in and enjoy it. There are barbecue facilities around the lagoon so If families want to spend the day at the pool and have a BBQ, they are more than welcome. There is also a small cafe at the lagoon that serves different types of food and drinks.
Also at the esplanade, near the lagoon, there is a ferris wheel called the Reef Eye. The Reef Eye gives visitors a 360 degree view of Cairns reaching 35m high. The gondolas are fully enclosed and can accommodate up to 6 people. I am sure kids will love this experience.

Muddy's Playground
Just about 10 minutes walk from the lagoon along the Esplanade there is a very popular kids playground called Muddy’s. Muddy's is a modern and fun splash playground and parkland.
The playground offers a wide range of play equipment including water play areas. Kids will spend hours playing and I am sure they will have a great time.
There is a cafe right next to the playground which serves a wide range of food and drinks. So while the kids play, parents can sit and order something to eat and also enjoy the good view and breeze of the ocean.

Indoor Playgrounds
Some shopping centres offer good indoor playgrounds for kids. During summer in Cairns the air-conditioned playgrounds are very welcome.
One of the best indoor playgrounds has to be at Stockland Shopping Centre. Stockland is located at Earlville, about 10 minutes drive from Cairns CBD. At Stocklands Shopping Centre families will find supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths and also popular stores such as Big W, Target, JB hifi and much more.
The playground features innovative designs to allow all children with all abilities to play together, including those with physical disabilities, vision, hearing and mobility impairments, or spectrum disorders such as autism.
I am sure all kids will love this interesting playground.
Sugarworld Adventure Park
Sugarworld Park is located in Edmonton about 20 minutes from Cairns CBD. The park is situated on 17 acres and boasts all the modern facilities needed for a fun-filled day out.
The park has seven slides, many swimming pools, a giant water bucket, fountains, waterfalls and water jets. It's the ultimate water splash zone.The park also has a range of super slides including the Tandem Tube, Superjet and Mat Racer! Visitors can also enjoy their 9-hole mini-golf course.
I am sure the kids and also the parents will have a great time at the park.
Sugarworld Park is not free but it is very affordable. Please note that the park closes during winter between May to September.

Inflatable park
Another great indoor playground in Cairns is the inflatable park called Inflatable Kingdom Cairns.
The inflatable park is an air-conditioned space with many inflatable play equipment for kids such as jumping cattles, inflatable slides and much more.
It is definitely a great space for kids to play and I am sure they will spend hours having a great time.
The inflatable park is not free but it costs a small fee to get in.
