What is there to do on Fitzroy Island?
Fitzroy Island is a tropical island located just 45 minutes by boat from Cairns. Fitzroy Island is the most popular island in the area, together with Green Island. We, from Tourism Cairns, definitely recommend a visit to this gorgeous island.
The island is quite big, 335 hectares in area with mountains, rainforest and a reef system around. So with the diversity of nature, Fitzroy Island has many different types of activities to offer. Please see them below.
- Snorkelling - Snorkelling has to be the most popular activity on the island. The reef system around the island is called the inner reef (closer to the mainland). Inner reef sites are generally made of more soft corals with smaller fish species but still quite a nice reef. The best spot to snorkel is off Nudey Beach, a beach located 20 minutes by foot through the rainforest from the main beach.
- Glass bottom boat tour - There are glass bottom boat tours available daily departing the main beach on Fitzroy. This is a great option for those people who would like to see the reef but are not keen to get in the water. The exact times for the tours are not too certain, it depends on the number of people booked for the day. So it is important that the glass bottom boat tour is booked in advance. - Kayaking - Fitzroy Island offers kayaking tours around the island. Kayaking around the island is a fun experience for all ages. Participants kayak around the island and get to locations where other people wouldn't be able to go without a kayak. - Scuba diving - Scuba diving is also a popular activity on the island. Introductory dive (for people without a licence or any experience) and certified dive (people with diving certification) are both available.
- Stand up paddleboarding tour - Stand up paddle boarding is so popular around the world and it is also on Fitzroy Island. The calm waters around the island makes the perfect location to do stand up paddle boarding.
- Hiking - Hiking has to be one of the most popular activities on Fitzroy Island. The big mountains and the rainforest makes the perfect environment for this activity. There are several tracks available for hiking. The most popular is to the summit, the highest spot on the island. Once at the top the view of the island and ocean are amazing. The hike is definitely worth it.
For those people who are not keen to do any activity on the island, no problem at all, there is a bar/restaurant on the island with ocean views which is a great place to spend the day, do nothing and relax.
