If you are visiting Cairns region I am sure the Great Barrier Reef is on your list of things to do.
The Great Barrier Reef of the coast of Queensland is the largest living thing on Earth, and even visible from outer space. It has thousands of reefs and hundreds of islands within 2,300 km of ecosystem. In total there are 600 types of hard and soft coral and it is home to countless species of colourful fish, molluscs and starfish, plus turtles, dolphins and sharks.
When It comes to visiting the Great Barrier Reef there are many different types of boats travelling to this beautiful marine world daily. There are small boats, big boats, sailing boats, and liveaboards. So which one should you choose? Tourism Cairns will help you understand the difference between them and choose the best tour for you.
If you are a certified diver and would like to explore the reef as much as possible, it is recommended that you choose one of those boats that focus more on diving. They are usually smaller boats and they visit 2 or 3 reefs in a day.
Travellers will spend all day in the water snorkelling and diving, and they can complete up to 3 dives in a day.
I have listed below the boats we recommend. Click on the link for more information.
If you are travelling with your family, especially if you have kids, you will love our recommendation below.
For families we definitely recommend travelling to a pontoon. The pontoon is a floating platform located in the middle of the reef. The pontoons offer passengers many different activities during the day such as glass bottom boat tours, semi-submersible tours, underwater observatory, seawalker (helmet diving), scooba-doo (underwater scooter), sea-bob (underwater snorkelling jet), unlimited snorkelling, introductory and certified diving and much more (activities can differ from one platform to the other). There is one specific platform that even offers a waterslide. It is the only waterslide located in the reef in Australia. It is great fun for kids and also adults. The platform also offers tables, chairs, change rooms, showers and sundeks so it is quite a comfortable place to be.
This is a great tour option for families with kids, or anyone seeking fun activities while exploring the reef. Also if someone in your family is a non- swimmer or would like to visit the reef and also stay dry, this is the perfect option.

For visitors who want to focus more on snorkelling you might like the idea of traveling on a sailing boat. They are a great option to explore the reef and also relax on board. If you are keen to try a dive they also offer an introductory dive, for those without a diving licence.
