Cooktown is a beautiful and historical town where Captain James Cook stayed for many days in the year 1770 so he could repair his damaged ship "Endeavour". This is a great tour for anyone interested in the fascinating history of this remarkable town.
The day starts with guests travelling on a purpose built air-conditioned 4WD along the Queensland coast from Cairns to Cape Tribulation. Along the way are amazing views of the ocean and the famous Daintree rainforest, considered one of the oldest rainforests in the world.
Not long after departing Cairns passengers have the chance to sit, relax in the rainforest and enjoy tasty homemade scones with jam and cream and a fresh local Daintree Tea or coffee.
The journey continues through the Bloomfield Track, one of the most scenic short 4WD drives in Queensland. The tour becomes quite adventurous driving on dirt roads with lots of river crossings along the way. There is a quick visit at the Bana Yirriji Art and Cultural Centre located on the banks of the Bloomfield River, where passengers can talk to one of the local indigenous artists.
The next stop is at the Lion’s Den Hotel for a delicious lunch. The hotel is one of Queensland’s landmark pubs, built in 1875 made of timber and iron. After lunch the next place to visit is the Black Mountain, a mountain with lots of mystery behind it. The area has a bad reputation as numerous people have disappeared without trace giving Black Mountain the nickname ‘mountain of death'.
At Cooktown the guide will take passengers to Grassy Hill where there is a beautiful view of the Endeavour River, Coral Sea and Cooktown. So make sure to have a camera ready for great photos. And enjoy the rest of the afternoon exploring this amazing historical town before returning to Cairns by the inland road, the Mulligan Highway.
There is a quick stop in the evening for those one who would like to have something else to eat (own expense) before arriving back in Cairns at around 8:30pm.
